Suzdal is the heart and exact starting point of the «Golden Ring of Russia». Today, it is a modern open-air museum city filled with monuments of the history and culture of our country.
There are several hundred churches, monasteries, and other attractions in Suzdal dating from different periods. The absolute majority of them are in excellent condition and are objects of display. Five objects are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
The main temples and ancient buildings are located in the historical center. The city prohibits the construction of buildings taller than three floors, so ancient churches and other architectural monuments can be seen from any point in the city.
Suzdal was founded in 1024. The city was built at the intersection of trade routes on the Kamenka River and immediately became a developed center of crafts and trade. During the reign of Yuri Dolgorukiy, the city gained the status of the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality. But when Yuri Dolgorukiy’s son, Andrei Bogolyubsky, settled in Vladimir and made this city the capital of the principality, Suzdal became an ordinary provincial town. Suzdal received its second birth at the end of the 20th century when the decision was made at the federal level to turn it into a museum city.
